Traffic generation for benchmarking data centre networks

Benchmarking is commonly used in research fields, such as computer architecture design and machine learning, a powerful paradigm for rigorously assessing, comparing, developing novel technologies. However, the data centre network (DCN) community lacks standard open-access reproducible traffic generation framework benchmark workload generation. Driving factors behind this include proprietary nature of traces, limited detail quantity network-level sets, high cost real world experimentation, poor reproducibility fidelity synthetically generated traffic. This curtailing community's understanding existing systems hindering ability with which technologies, optical DCNs, can be developed, compared, tested. We present TrafPy; an generating both realistic custom DCN traces. TrafPy compatible any simulation, emulation, or experimentation environment, standardised benchmarking investigating properties limitations schedulers, switches, routers, resource managers. give overview framework, provide brief demonstration its efficacy through investigation into sensitivity some canonical scheduling algorithms to varying trace characteristics context DCNs. open-sourced via GitHub all associated manuscript RDR.
